I have chosen to paint my brother for this quarter’s first in class project. Since he is younger, when he was born I wasn’t sure what type of brother he would become. To me, my brother’s spirit reminds me of a lion. He’s quite brave but also prideful making him both strong and also thickskinned. I wanted to juxtapose his baby photo with a one line drawing if a lion in this painting. I have drawn the one line drawing of the lion and did many different sketches of it to get it right, and also used tracing paper to find a good composition with the baby’s photo. Ive completed the grid and the underlying sketch of this painting so far.

Can’t believe I’m done?? Woah. I've learned a whole lot from this project, no matter how frustrating and long it took. Although this painting isn't as realistic as I had wished, I hadn't anticipated how difficult it would be to work with knife and specific details since I haven't had a huge issue with portraits. I also, redid the sky three times over the course of this project and I learned about working with atmospheric effect. The sky's color is not right, but I actually quite enjoy the dullish look that the light blueish grayish vibe it gives off. The landscape looks somber yet still bright with the shrubbery. OH! I hate shrubbery. I hated painting each individual bush and tree especially using a knife because without the help of a fan brush, painting the leaves was quite difficult. Overall, I think this piece is a success, but definitely has room for improvement. :)) Also I like it which is a plus considering I don't usually like my works that are supposed to be realistic. So frustrated!!! Since I decided to redo the sky, I mixed a new color that better matches the picture, and as I started to apply the paint with the knife, the previous layer began to ball up into really strange hard pieces and kept ruining my layers and making strange lines which made me so frustrated because I had to clean my knife every stroke and wasted a lot of color because of it. Also, it has made a really yucky new layer, so I am not pleased with the sky at all currently. It may dry okay, however, so I am letting it sit for a day before I work on it more. Coach suggested that I redo the mountains using the color of my sky and then adding a muted green so that it has the proper atmospheric effect, and I am working on it currently.
On Friday night, I went to the fall art walk with our class and visited quite a few exhibitions including the ada exhibit, the ICU, the 1708 exhibit, and the Blue Iris exhibit. All were extremely interesting and unique, but my favorite was the ada exhibit because it explored painting and an abstract view on it. Aside from the main artist, Sarah Trigg's work was displayed in the back, and it also had an artist statement beside it. Her art represents the ecosystem and she uses the paint to build up layers to show the layers of sediment. I think that it is really interesting that she takes breaks while working on her paintings in order to build up the layers of acrylic. This relates to my works, because I am also trying to implement the use of layers to reveal my message, and here she has used to to represent her entire message. Although I don't work with acrylic as often, she has used acrylic's properties to her advantage, showing thick, chunky sections, and other areas where the paint is shown to be runny and thin. The texture of her painting also contributed to what she was trying to represent. I love the ADA gallery because I think it was really cute and I loved the entrance area with the ada sign (above). The main artist's work didn't catch my eye as much as Sarah Trigg's but it was still displayed in a very interesting way.
