This lunchtime lecture was a symposium where old art students of maggie walker came back and discussed their experiences with going to art school. This lecture included Lily May who went to MICA, Eli, Andre, Alex, Jack, who went to VCU, and Bailey who went to UVA. Although I am not particularly interested in going to art school, this lecture was actually really interesting because they didn't try and convince me how amazing art school is, but instead just offered helpful information. I also found it really interesting to hear about the resources of both MICA and VCU. Their classes are challenging and allow them to grow as artists because they meet with many artists, and their professors guide them. Alex discussed her ability to travel abroad which is something that I am really interested in, and she touched on the fact that it didn't really have a lot to do with her art, but affected it nonetheless. Bailey's experience with art school was the most interesting. He wanted to major in politics, but after the 2016 election, decided to pursue art instead. Like me, he needs some instruction with art and decided to become an architect, which sparked my interest because although I may not want to be an artist, architecture has always interested me. I was intrigued by the downsides of art school and how studio culture can be toxic and unfriendly to some majors. However, I learned that majoring in art is a valuable experience because you can make what you want of it, and is quite flexible. It was also reassuring to hear that all the time spent doing art at Maggie Walker hones skills that will be useful in college even if you don't major in art. Very interesting lecture, and valuable information for next year when I am thinking about majors and how they can tie in with the art that I did in high school.

I am struggling. I cannot figure out the correct shades of the skin, and I'm really having a hard time figuring out how the color of the skin is tinted. I did the arm first in yellow light when the heat lamps were on in the classroom, and therefore I thought that the color was more yellow than it was, which resulted in a brown thigh which looks reallllly bad. But, coach told me to put blocks of paint from the same mix first all over the body, and then layer on highlights and shadows later so that the baby is one color. Also, I need to really work on how I'm using the knife because currently the skin is looking quite blotchy and almost like a cartoon. I don't love how it's coming along but hopefully it will be better?
