head:
concept: The head project allows for an opportunity to solve the problem of our concept, themes, content, and overrall ideas. I chose to make two projects based off the topic of unity because I’ve been doing art based off of my travel experiences or something related to the world/real life events. Unity can be represented by many works of art, but I am particularly focusing on how it can be seen when on an airplane or in a different country.
This piece is "railways". Every country in the world has some form of public transportation whether it is by bus, train, or railroads. This transportation in some way unifies the country by providing a way for its people to get to different places. In fact, this network is the basis of many countries and this type of transportation dating back to canals, wagons, and simply roads are the basis of many civilizations all over the world. I think this constant in each city or country is interesting because no matter how different these places are, each one has a way to get around. However, these networks are very different. For example, Switzerland's trains are known to be so timely that the train's arrival is more accurate then ones watch. However, India's train stations are major crime centers and are very haphazard because of the sheer amount of people there. This piece was specifically based off of the major India train system called India Railways. It connects all the major cities in the country which are represented by pushpins. I used my pocket knife to whittle away the wood of a scrap piece and I got many splinters as a result :(, but I really, REALLY love how it looks and might look into using wood as a material in the future.

This piece is named “timezone”. There is a freeness to being up a couple thousand in the air. Since there is no access to wifi or a way to content people down below, there is often a calmness that settles upon people who are usually hassled with their work-lives. Personally, I think that the beauty of flying is that at a certain point, you have no idea where in the world you are, how cold it is outside, what time it is, or what’s going on in the world. For a few hours you lose so much reality from the world because certain things simply aren’t tangible in an airplane. My piece is meant to represent the unity of the sky that you see in an airplane. I once was on a plane and by the time I had landed, I had technically had a 40 hour day because of the amount of time zones we had flown through. I think this is crazy because the sky that you see outside only reveals the time of the day it may possibly be where you are. No matter what is happening in the world, everywhere someone is working at 1am and another is eating lunch with their family. I think that the whole concept of flying brings together the differences that you see when you’re on earth.

heart:
concept: The heart portion of the project is to allow oneself to really explore what they love doing without having to think about the content. This includes exploring the medium, subject, process of the works. I chose the concept "landscape" (I promise I wanted to do this before I saw that Mrs. Mosley gave it as an example!" **heads up: I explored what I loved with one of these pieces and for the other, I kind of tried something completely new which is why it is awful, but it is something that I've been wanting to try for a while.
This piece is called "elevated." This piece is a really new type of work that I haven’t ever created. However, each process that was used to make this work is one that I individually love. Therefore, “elevated” represents a hybrid child of all my favorite art processes. One, the India outline made of wire which is held up above the actual painting took me many hours (sad) to create with a string of wire and a hot glue gun and some wooden dowels. The background is made up of a bunch of paper mache with old book pges. These are stuck onto a hard cardboard piece. Finally, nicely pictures behind the wire is a small vison as to what the “Switzerland of India”, Kashmir looks like. Also, the Himalayas are a cery sacred part of the country’s existence. The ladnscape is made with oilpaints which gives the paint a more dimensional feel. This work of art is honestly one of my favorite because althought I was constantly thinking about the content while making it, it was so much more fun and easy to make because I really wnjoyed doing all the separate steps.

This piece is called “countryside”. This is a watercolor painting and is a w f u l. BUT, I learned a lot about a different style if painting with it. Traditionally with watercolor, there are many layers and some bold colors and others diluted with color and the paint overlaps each other with a continuous coverage of the paper. However, many pieces that you see selling or in Korean and Chinese watercolor paintings leave gaps of white and use ink to their advantage to create a different type of painting. Until now, I haven’t had the courage to use a completely new style and I hate how it looks but it was really an adventure. I used blocks of color with very little change in values and used very bold colors. The tree in the corner also looks like a mess but it was intriguing to create because it was a complete mixing of the colors that usually separately depict a tree. Therefore, this painting includes a medium that I love, but a new process that I have been wanting to try because it seemed to go with my style: go for it even if you aren’t completely comfortable yet. 🤪
